Meet the Designer Behind the New Shriners Children's Philadelphia Tie and Scarf

Raylin was so excited to see her creation for the first time! Pictured: Raylin holding scarf and tie.

Raylin is our newest tie and scarf contest winner at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia.

Earlier this year, the marketing and communications department hosted an art contest, encouraging patients to create designs for a new patient-designed tie and scarf for the hospital. After receiving many creative submissions, staff members selected 7-year-old Raylin’s design as the winner. Next, her artwork was sent to a designer who transformed it into a design for the new hospital necktie, scarf and bowtie.

Raylin was born with a right brachial plexus injury and shoulder subluxation. She first visited Shriners Children’s Ohio (formerly Shriners Children's Cincinnati) in 2016, and later began seeing Scott Kozin M.D., chief of staff in Philadelphia, in 2019. Raylin’s care team also includes Josh Pahys, M.D., orthopedic spine surgeon, and clinical researchers, to name a few.

“Shriners Children’s has helped my arm feel so much better. I drew my picture because I love them for helping me. They have helped so many kids and that means a lot,” said Raylin.

Our ties are popular with many supporters, including Shriners, staff members, and, especially, board members. The scarves are also a perfect accessory for women to wear the design. This year marked the fourth time since 2011 that this contest has been held.

Raylin’s artwork features Fezzy, the Shriners Children's teddy bear mascot; an exterior of the hospital; medical equipment; and our signature image from the 1970s of a Shriner carrying a child.

With one of her favorite subjects being art, Raylin was ecstatic that she was selected as the winner. She also loves to play outside, visit the beach, attend occupational therapy and aquatic therapy, and go to church. While in Philadelphia for her appointments, she loves to visit Sesame Place.

“My drawing is called Help is, Hope is, Love is Shriners Children’s,” said Raylin.

Ties, scarves and bowties are now available for purchase within the hospital the next time you are here.

Congratulations Raylin!
