Shriners Childrens Texas Breaks Ground

Shriners, patients and volunteers at groundbreaking

Board Members, community leaders and Patient Ambassadors break ground on new expansion.

Shriners Children’s Texas recently broke ground on a new 40-unit housing facility and parking garage to better serve patients and their families coming for care. The ceremony was attended by hospital Board Members, Mayor of Galveston Craig Brown, Galveston city council members, Shriners Children’s Texas Patient Ambassadors Libbie and Xavi, along with other community members and officials.

“Today’s groundbreaking is a significant milestone for our patients and families,” Mary Glendening, hospital administrator, said. “When they come to receive Shriners world-renowned specialty care here in Texas, from either here in the U.S. or from all over the world, this new housing will provide a welcoming place of rest during a very stressful time. It will also serve as a place where families will connect, develop friendships and offer each other support while their children are healing.”

To better serve their growing patient population and provide comprehensive rehabilitation services, the hospital has undergone several internal renovations over the past two years. This began after January 2021, when Shriners Children's merged the services of their Houston and Galveston facilities. Now, Shriners Children’s Texas offers a full service line of specialty pediatric care under one roof, including orthopedic care, cleft lip and palate, and burns.
