Grant Overcomes Bilateral Clubfoot

Grant overcomes bilateral clubfoot through specialized treatment at Shriners Children’s Spokane.

Grant’s path to Shriners Children’s Spokane began with a unique challenge: He was born with bilateral clubfoot.

A patient since infancy, Grant progressed through various treatments for his condition, including surgery, casting, bracing and physical therapy. His customized treatment plan, tailored to his specific needs, has paved the way for Grant’s success in adolescence.

Under the care and guidance of Glen Baird, M.D., who is fellowship-trained in pediatric orthopedics and specializes in clubfoot, Grant completed his first surgery to lengthen his heel cords. This marked the beginning of a series of procedures that would ultimately reshape Grant’s mobility.

Doctors performed subsequent surgeries over the years to rotate Grant’s shinbones, allowing for greater movement and improved function. These procedures, combined with the use of braces and casts, complimented by physical therapy, worked to support the proper development of his feet.

Grant's mother, Mandy, reflects on the profound impact that Shriners Children's has had on her son's life. She acknowledges that without the exceptional care and support provided by the Shriners Children’s Spokane team, Grant would not be the active and vibrant individual he is today.

Nothing can stop Grant from accomplishing his goals, and much of this is thanks to Shriners Children’s and his amazing team.

Grant enjoys participating in drama and community theater. He also enjoys playing basketball, an activity Mandy once believed would be unattainable for Grant. The now high school sophomore excels in choir at his school, and has performed the national anthem at many local events.

Grant even has the exciting opportunity to represent Shriners Children’s Spokane at the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas. He is one of 21 Patient Ambassadors chosen from across the country who will serve as standard bearers for the professional golf tournament.

“I’m really excited to be chosen to represent Shriners Children’s Spokane at the Shriners Children’s Open, and have the opportunity to meet patients from the other locations across the country,” Grant said. “To be able to walk the course with the professional golfers in a national PGA TOUR tournament makes it even more exciting!”

Grant’s journey is a nod to the power of specialty pediatric orthopedic care provided at Shriners Children’s Spokane. His story demonstrates that with the right support, patients can overcome challenging conditions and achieve their dreams.
