Patients and surgeries were common topics at Sarah Oswald, M.D.'s dinner table growing up. Her nurse mother and pharmacist father entertained her and her sisters with many stories about their jobs throughout her childhood. Dr. Oswald developed a deep love of and respect for the complexities of the human body and decided to learn more by majoring in biology and then going on to medical school. Anesthesiology proved to be a great fit for her – exciting, complex and interactive. When she started working with pediatric patients during her anesthesiology residency she felt a strong, immediate click. She loved helping these small patients and their families, informing and reassuring them along the way of their perioperative journey.
As Dr. Oswald honed her pediatric knowledge and procedural skills during fellowship, she realized she would be happiest working in a setting that serves children of all ages. She wanted (and continues to strive) to make an impact through her service to pediatric patients as well as in the development of other doctors. Dr. Oswald is committed to providing empathetic, exceptional perioperative care to children. Working at Shriners Children's Chicago for the past eight years has provided her with the opportunity to do so every day. She says it is an amazing privilege to continue caring for children in the operating room environment at Shriners Children's.
