Jorge Pineda, M.D., took an interest in medicine from his experiences as a child with two physicians as parents and through the eyes of a patient. As a child, he had a talent for putting himself in potentially harmful situations. He survived cardiac arrest after nearly drowning, and severely injured his esophagus after an accidental lye ingestion as a toddler. He is here today and functioning at the capacity he is because of the skill and hard work of all his providers. He is eternally grateful to them for it. Being a physician is his way of saying thanks to them and giving the gift they gave him to others.
Dr. Pineda chose to work with children simply because when they come to Shriners Children's, they need our help. Children are innocent and look at life in a different way. They have hope, vast imaginations and call things as they see them. Despite their youth and inexperience, they can be great teachers.
Dr. Pineda says life is crazy. He never thought he would work with children. When he was in medical school, he was terrified of his pediatric rotation. Now, here he is, the father of four and a pediatric anesthesiologist at Shriners Children's.
As an anesthesia resident, Dr. Pineda took great interest in the practice of regional anesthesia. Being able to block pain pathways and provide a way to help manage pain that reduces or takes away the need for opioids postoperatively was very interesting to him. He chose to work at Shriners Children's because of our mission to provide great care to all children. Working at Shriners Children's gives him a great opportunity to use his skills to help children have a more comfortable experience during a potentially anxiety-provoking and painful time. He enjoys collaborating with the surgeons and his anesthesia colleagues at Shriners Children's to create the best plan for each individual patient.
When he's not working, Dr. Pineda enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He grew up playing ice hockey and continues to play today. He also grew up playing video games which he still greatly enjoys, even though his kids are starting to beat him. Dr. Pineda also enjoys sketching.
