Shriners Children’s provides innovative, personalized care for children with reconstructive needs.

Surgical reconstruction can greatly improve function and/or cosmetic appearance in children with reconstructive needs. Whether helping a child with scars from a burn injury or wound, or improving a condition they inherited at birth, our specialists consider the needs of the individual before deciding on the best surgical option.

Shriners Children's reconstructive team includes plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, occupational and physical therapists, nutritionists, care managers and more who work together to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Specific treatments and services may vary by location. Please contact a specific location for more information.

Plastic Surgery Procedures

Our highly-specialized team of plastic surgeons realize how important reconstructive surgery is to give your child the best possible quality of life, as this can affect not only appearance but functionality and mobility as well. Here are some examples of reconstructive procedures offered at Shriners Children's.

Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate Surgery

Facial clefts are the number one craniofacial birth defect addressed by our patient and family-centered teams. The cleft teams at Shriners Children's understand that a surgical approach for cleft lip and cleft palate can be vitally important for more than just cosmetic reasons, as it can affect breathing, hearing, speaking, and eating.

Craniofacial Surgery

Shriners Children's understands that craniofacial conditions and the need for craniofacial surgery present unique characteristics and challenges. No two cases are ever the same, which is why treatment plans are created based on each patient's personal needs. Each child is met with respect, compassion, and an approach that supports the best quality of life for the child.

Laser Surgery

One of the most innovative reconstructive treatments Shriners Children's provides is laser surgery.

LASER stands for "Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation." Instead of using traditional surgical instruments such as scalpels, laser surgery uses special light beams targeted to specific areas on the child’s body to promote healing in scar tissue.

There are several different types of lasers that can be used in a surgical setting and each type is used to treat specific forms of scarring. Laser surgery is very effective in treating burn scars, congenital abnormalities, ear and hand deformities or injuries and so much more.

We have a dedication and passion to correct issues which will give your child the opportunity to grow and to be successful.

School and Community Re-entry Program

School and community re-entry programs are ideal for any child who has experienced a burn injury, trauma or diagnosis that has caused substantial changes to the child’s lifestyle and/or aspect of self. These programs help a child return to school by educating their teachers and peers. In doing so, teachers and peers become an essential part of the re-entry process, ensuring the transition is healthy, supportive, safe and positive.
