Families Come First at Shriners Children's Hawai`i
Along with exceptional care for your child, we'll take good care of you, too. Be sure to take advantage of our amenities and services.
Transportation Services
Transportation to and from the Daniel K. Inouye Airport is initiated by the child’s primary care physician, who will submit a request to the patient’s insurance provider. From there, insurance will secure your transportation. Upon request, our partner Speedishuttle will transport patients to the hospital.
Shriners Children's Hawai`i may assist with transportation needs in the event you and your child have no other resource for transportation. Contact the care management transportation resource navigator for assistance at 808-951-3669.
For directions on how to get to the hospital, visit the Getting Here page.
Interpretation Services
Our care interpreters allow you to understand all aspects of your child's care and help your child feel comfortable. Learn more about our interpreter services.
Overnight Accommodations
Our on-site family center has 17 rooms for patients and their parent or guardian for extended stays while they recover from surgery. We average 30 to 35 out-of-state patients in the community daily, so our housing provides a cost-effective option. We encourage families to stay with relatives or friends and use the family center as the “placement of last resort.”
If you need more information about offsite overnight options, please contact our care management team at 808-951-3670.
Hospital Dining Room
The hospital dining room is located on the first floor, to the right of the lobby. Our talented food service staff provides a rotating menu of breakfast and lunch options between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday–Friday. The dining room is closed on weekends and holidays.
All cafeteria items are pre-prepared and individually wrapped for safety and convenience.
Dining services only accept cash. Vending machines are available 24 hours per day.

Preparing Your Child for Their Hospital Stay
Visiting a hospital can be a stressful time for both you and your child. Here are a few things you can do/keep in mind to help your child feel positive about their upcoming visit.
For younger children:
- Read stories or watch videos with them about going to the hospital.
- Encourage doctor play. Allow your child to talk about their thoughts and feelings.
- Allow your child to help pack. Let them choose a few favorite items to bring to the hospital.
- Know what is comforting to your child and share those methods with the staff members helping to care for your child.
- Reassure young children that hospitalization is not a punishment, but a place where children heal.
For teens:
- Have your teen speak with someone who has had a similar hospitalization.
- Encourage your teen to maintain contact with family and friends through visits, phone calls, email or snail mail.
- Have your teen pack for the hospital stay. Remind your teen to include both special and personal items, but please leave valuables at home.
Food Services
Children may need specialized diets, vitamin/mineral supplementation, nutrient-rich snacks, as well as nutrition counseling to maintain a healthy weight and energy balance. Our on-staff registered dietitian (RDN) provides nutritional assessment and a plan of care, including counseling, to patients and caregivers with continued follow-up in the outpatient clinic.
Inpatients can choose their meals from the room service menu or from the selections in the dining room. We have a food service staff of many talents who use their creative abilities to provide exciting encounters with food. The team works with recreational therapy and other departments to create unique presentations for various events such as Halloween, Christmas, May Day, special meetings and other functions.
