Patient Programs

Our Care Extends Beyond Our Walls

At Shriners Children's Shreveport, our team is committed to caring for the overall health and well-being of our patients. This includes their minds as well as their bodies. In that spirit, we offer a wide variety of programs.

Our extensive patient programs give children the opportunity to participate in enjoyable activities to brighten their stay and in camps that can help them return to their communities more active and confident.

Shriners Children's partners with a number of community organizations to provide opportunities for children to explore and grow their overall potential inside and outside of the hospital. Your nurse or care coordinator can direct you to opportunities in the community.

Programs

Bricks for Kids

Our friends at Bricks for Kids visit the hospital regularly to conduct creative and beneficial building sessions with Lego bricks. Children construct pre-planned projects under the guidance of program coordinators. The sessions help children build confidence and enhance their fine motor skills, all while having fun in the process!

Pet Therapy

Our pet therapy program features a variety of dogs specially trained and certified to provide comfort and affection to kids. The furry friends make regular visits to families on our inpatient unit and children participating in therapy. Learn more about our Pet Therapy Program.

Spirit of Children

In October, Spirit of Children hosts fun activities and brings costumes, accessories, decorations and goody bags for patients as part of an effort to make their stay with us less scary.

Child Life

Our child life specialists help to "normalize" the hospital experience by helping make the environment more accessible to children. Our team regularly offers craft projects and other activities in our Central Activates Area, encouraging both structured and unstructured play. They also take children on special outings to visit places such as Build-A-Bear or a movie theater, or to enjoy activities such as fishing, berry picking and sporting activities.

Therapeutic Riding Program

Children participating in therapeutic riding engage in many of the physical activities explored during therapy while experiencing all the joys of riding a horse. Several times a year, we visit our friends at Great Results Equine-Assisted Therapies (G.R.E.A.T.) to conduct this activity with children who qualify.
