Best Children's Hospitals: Portland Shriners Hospital Ranked in Top 50 of U.S. News World Report
Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland recently received recognition in the U.S. News & World Report’s ranking for Best Children’s Hospitals in the category of Pediatric Orthopedics. With a profound commitment to the community, the Portland Shriners Hospital staff members have dedicated themselves to providing high-quality pediatric orthopaedic care to kids in the Pacific Northwest since 1924.
This is the first year that the Portland Shriners Hospital submitted their clinical data to U.S. News & World Report for consideration. Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland is proud to be included in the rankings, along with five other Shriners Hospitals for Children locations this year. In collaboration with Oregon Health and Science University, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, the Portland Shriners Hospital was ranked #44 in the category of Pediatric Orthopedics.
“This award recognizes the outstanding patient-centered care and comprehensive pediatric orthopaedic services that Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland has provided for the past 96 years,” said Dereesa Reid, hospital administrator. “Many of the Shriners Hospitals for Children locations across the nation are ranked in the top 50 hospitals, and this recognition reflects our outstanding model of care.”
Through a nationally conducted survey, U.S. News & World Report selects hospitals based on clinical data that includes measures such as patient safety, infection prevention and adequacy of nursing staffing. Additionally, peer surveys from pediatric specialists are utilized to help determine the score for each hospital. To earn this prestigious recognition in a specialty category, hospitals must demonstrate exceptional care models and the ability to treat medically complex patients.
The Portland Shriners Hospital offers the largest group of pediatric orthopaedic physicians in the Pacific Northwest, and their team of specialists provides care for thousands of children each year. They treat a range of orthopaedic conditions including scoliosis, hip dysplasia, sports injuries, chest wall deformities, cleft lip and palate, limb deficiencies, spina bifida, cerebral palsy and so much more.
In addition to direct patient care, both clinical and basic research teams at the Portland Shriners Hospital are at the core of their mission. Research efforts provide opportunities every day to advance their model of care and ensure that the best possible treatment options are utilized. An example of this is the recent discovery of biomarker CXM, which will eventually allow physicians to predict the rate of a child’s growth instantaneously and make immediate, informed decisions about the child’s medical care.
Furthermore, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Portland offers robust education opportunities for training medical professionals through continuing education, fellowship opportunities and an international residency program.
