Sharing Our Research in Human Movement

A biomedical engineer from our motion analysis center and two graduate students presented to the Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis Society (GCMAS). The researchers from the Chicago Shriners Hospital presented projects conducted in our hospital gait lab involving foot and ankle biomechanics for patients with cerebral palsy, and a separate study of knee height asymmetry.

The GCMAS webinar series is a replacement for their in-person annual meeting, offering virtual podium presentations to physicians, allied health professionals, engineers, biomechanists and scientists working together to advance scientific knowledge, technical capabilities, and clinical practice in the field of human movement. Shriners Hospitals is pleased to participate, as part of our mission is sharing our expertise to help improve medical care and services for children.

The presenters and topics were:

  • Karen Kruger, Ph.D., biomedical engineer, Shriners Hospitals for Children: A Long-term Comparison of Lateral Column Lengthening and Medial Calcaneal Sliding Osteotomy for Correction of Pes Planovalgus Deformity in Cerebral Palsy. This research is the result of a Shriners Hospitals research grant.
  • Philip Papaioannou, medical student: Surgical Correction of Bilateral Pes Planovalgus in a Child with Diplegic Cerebral Palsy: A Case Study.
  • Jacqueline Simon, a Marquette University engineering post-doctoral candidate: Joint Contact Force Model for Patients with Knee Height Asymmetry. This is the starting work of a grant awarded to Haluk Altiok, M.D., from the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America.
