Colorectal and Urology Programs Receive State Designation

The California Children’s Services (CCS) program, operated by the Integrated Systems of Care Division of the Department of Health Care Services in California, approved  Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California as a Colorectal and Urology Special Care Center (SCC). This recognition distinguishes Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California’s pediatric colorectal center as a destination for outstanding pediatric colorectal care in the state of California.

The Northern California Shriners Hospital is the first and only pediatric hospital in the state of California to have this designation.

“The Colorectal and Urology Special Care Center designation is another example and recognition of our hospital’s relentless work to provide extraordinary specialty pediatric care to children throughout California,” said CEO and Administrator Margaret Bryan. “This designation means that children and families will be able to more easily access pediatric care for complex urologic and colorectal conditions closer to home.”

The pediatric colorectal center at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California is home to a team of nationally recognized pediatric surgeons supported by a multidisciplinary team that manages complex colorectal cases. Social workers, child life specialists, nurses, dietitians and physicians work together to determine the best possible treatment options and plans for each individual patient in the colorectal and bowel management program.

“The individualized, multidisciplinary approach to treatment is the key to the success we’ve seen in our pediatric colorectal center,” said director of the pediatric colorectal center and pediatric surgeon Payam Saadai, M.D. “We hold weekly meetings to discuss and organize personalized treatment options and plans for individual patients. The thoughtful input and teamwork among our staff, coupled with collaboration with patients and families, has proven to be highly effective.”
