2020 DAISY Award Given to Cindy Gregory

Congratulations to Cindy Gregory, RN, who was named the 2020 DAISY Award recipient for Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City! Nominated by several of her colleagues and patient families, Cindy, who works the night shift on the inpatient unit, was praised for her reliability, caring for our kids as if they were their own, competency, being extremely approachable to patients and making real connections with the children on the inpatient unit.

Cindy Gregory, RN, has been with Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City for over 23 years. Working the night shift means caring for children who have often just had surgery, and need more time at the hospital to recover. Advances in technology have allowed for many surgeries to be outpatient procedures, and kids often go home the same day. So these children who stay longer are a smaller group, and the job of the night nurse is a quiet one. But for those children who may be scared and uncomfortable spending the night at the hospital, the night nurse can mean everything.

In their nomination form, one family said, “Cindy is an exceptional nurse. Not only is she skilled and competent, she took time to answer questions, explain procedures and ensure our daughter’s care and safety was the top priority. Most importantly, she took personal interest in our daughter, learning her likes and dislikes and making a connection. My daughter was always excited to see her. She made a seven-week stay bearable.”

Started by the family of Patrick Barnes, who recognized the importance of nurses in a patient’s life, the DAISY Award honors the super-human work nurses do for patients and families. Her colleagues agree that Cindy has made an incredible impact on those she has encountered at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City, and is very deserving of this recognition.
