Two Sacramento Nonprofits Combine Art and Care for Children During the Pandemic
Today, the Northern California Shriners Hospital and Sacramento Contemporary Dance Theatre (SCDT), two mission-driven nonprofits in Sacramento, have come together to support each other in raising much needed funds for the hospital and giving dancers an opportunity to perform on a digital stage, since live presentations are on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are unbelievably thankful to Sacramento Contemporary Dance Theater for their generous artistic gift to our hospital and our Gift of Care fundraising campaign,” said Alan Anderson, director of development. “This video beautifully captures the true meaning of our hospital’s mission to help children in our community and beyond.”
Jacob Gutiérrez-Montoya, founder and artistic director of SCDT, is the creative genius behind the Gift of Care video creation.
“My mission is to inspire people in our community to give back this holiday season by combining dance and theatre to bring meaningful stories to life,” said Jacob. “Find an important cause, one that is making a change in our community, and give back. Shriners Hospitals for Children is changing lives and I hope my art creates quantifiable change in the community.”
SCDT is committed to building bridges for local nonprofits through the world of dance, championing their causes and raising funds and awareness in support of their missions.
World-renowned muralist and visual artist Maren Conrad also donated an original fine art piece for auction titled Spreading Miracles. It is 36 inches wide by 48 inches high, and features gold and silver leafing over a canvas painted with oil and resin. “The flower is symbolic, a symbol for hope and wishing,” said Maren. “I was inspired by so many stories of strength, hope and possibility that I heard from patients and their families at this hospital, and this piece represents the many possibilities and futures they create for these children’s lives.”
Maren’s canvas is currently up for auction. All funds will support specialty pediatric care for kids at the Northern California Shriners Hospital.
The Gift of Care fundraising campaign at the Northern California Shriners Hospital hopes to raise $140,000 this holiday season and runs from Nov. 23, 2020 – Dec. 20, 2020.
