Continuing the Mission Through Research at the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital

Research is an integral part of what we do at Shriners Hospitals for Children, and our dedication to research allows us to improve our clinical care and help patients and their families. We currently have multiple studies taking place at the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital. All of our physicians are dedicated to their research. Due to the rare nature of the many pediatric conditions we treat, our physicians also collaborate on studies with doctors and hospitals across the world to combine data and reach meaningful conclusions in pediatric medicine.

In 2019, we started our genomics initiative, which utilizes all of our Shriners Hospitals for Children locations to collect genetic samples. We use these samples to learn more about potential genetic causes of various conditions. Participation in our genetic study yields compelling results that can further various areas of pediatric medicine.

The Philadelphia Shriners Hospital is well known for our treatment of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), led by Harold van Bosse, M.D. Our multi-site AMC registry study allows us to gather medical history and patient-reported outcomes to improve the care provided to children who have this condition. This study is the first of its kind to incorporate multiple institutions to collaborate regarding research surrounding this rare condition.

In 2019, Corinna Franklin, M.D., was awarded a grant to coordinate sport clinical care and research throughout the Shriners Hospitals for Children system. Her work will standardize information that is collected across our system and standardize documentation for further research. Additionally, we are beginning to study 3D motion capture of athletes who complete sports-related motion such as baseball, dancing and running. We will soon be looking for young athletes to participate in this research.

All of our doctors consistently incorporate state-of-the-art clinical research findings into their practice and are passionate about utilizing research to provide the best possible care.
