Patient Donates Money Raised from Annual Golf Tournament

Reece and her family have given back once again, this time presenting a check for $68,000. The money was generously raised through their annual Golf Fore Reece Golf Tournament. Although COVID-19 required them to take extra precautions to keep their golfers safe during their tournament in September of last year, they were still able to have an eventful and fulfilling day.

Team Reece, the nonprofit foundation started by the family, hosts the golf tournament and has raised over $290,000 for the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital over the past six years. This annual event is always filled with good friends, food and generosity, and this year was no exception.

“Our hearts were telling us to do this, even if not that many people attended or even if we didn’t raise as much as before,” said Micah, Reece’s mother and president of Team Reece. “The tournament this year was still awesome even with the restrictions. It was one of our most well-attended events.”

Although she doesn’t care too much for actually playing golf – unlike her father and brother – Reece was the star of the event. “She was still the celebrity of the day,” said Micah. “She had fun with everyone and got to ride around in the golf cart all day.”

Reece made sure to note that she had fun riding around in the carts – she even got to drive one for a while – and that the day was also filled with smaller fun activities, including a bubble gum blowing competition with her friends.

The family was inspired to give back to the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital because of the excellent care Reece has received throughout her life. Nine years ago, she was born with a rare condition called arthrogryposis. She had club feet, a dislocated knee and hip, and multiple contractures in her leg muscles. She previously received care at another children’s hospital, but her parents wanted a second opinion from well-known physicians specializing in arthrogryposis.

Through the great care Reece has received at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia, she has been able to gain mobility in her hips and dexterity in her hands, and even walks and runs without assistance. Her course of care was developed by lower extremity surgeon Harold van Bosse, M.D., and upper extremity surgeon and Chief of Staff Scott Kozin, M.D., to fit Reece’s individual care needs.

Reece continues to receive care at the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital for her arthrogryposis. Micah said she feels blessed to be able to have so many great people helping her daughter. “Everyone here is so awesome, which is why we’re honored to give back through our tournament every year.”
