Shriners Children's Lexington Was the Natural Choice for Volunteer

When Mark decided it was time to find a volunteer opportunity, there was only one option.

“Shriners Children’s Lexington was the only choice,” he said. “I came last year wanting to volunteer, but the program was still on hold from COVID. So, I waited. When they decided to open back up to volunteers, I got the call and it has been a wonderful opportunity ever since.”

Mark had retired from his job as a quality supervisor at Toyota just a couple of years prior. He has spent most of his early retirement days traveling with his wife, Donna, playing golf and spending time with his five children and three grandchildren. Eventually, Mark decided he had the time to give to others. “I was looking for a way to help someone,” he said.

Mark chose Shriners Children’s Lexington because his daughter, Stacy, was a patient there in the 1980s. “Stacy has cerebral palsy and some other health issues,” he said. “She had surgery with Dr. David Stevens at Shriners in 1987, and then many appointments and visits after that.”

Mark, whose family lived in Western Kentucky in the 1980s, recalls the drive being worth it for the care his daughter received. “It was an incredible experience,” he said. “She had gone to other doctors and things were not getting better. I will always remember the quality of care we got and the kindness of the staff.”

Mark said the kind staff also stands out during his experience as a volunteer. “Everyone is just a joy to be around,” he said.

During his days at the medical center, Mark helps by stocking and organizing the books and magazines in the waiting areas, making sure there are plenty of coloring pages and crayons in the clinic area for children waiting for appointments, and delivering treats to families with his snack cart.

“I also help patients and families navigate the building, making sure they get where they need to be,” he said. “I assist patients with wheelchairs, making sure they get to their cars and through the parking garage easily. I assist with anything else needed of me.”

Mark said the experience has been great and encourages others to seek out volunteer opportunities. “Volunteering at Shriners, after they did so much for my daughter, is very gratifying,” he said. “I think everyone should volunteer. Go spend your time helping someone else if you can.”
