New Doylestown Clinic Makes Follow-up Care Easier for Patient Family

Learn about Elizabeth's sports injury journey.

Like many children who play sports, Elizabeth broke her ankle while playing soccer with her club team. Her mother, Mollie, immediately took her to the Doylestown Health emergency department. It was determined that Elizabeth would need to see an orthopedic specialist and possibly need surgery. Because it was so late in the evening, there was no specialist on-site in the hospital at that time.

The pediatric surgeon who followed up with Mollie the next morning suggested that she call Shriners Children's, knowing that the healthcare system's providers are familiar and have more experience with child-related injuries. Mollie called that morning and was able to bring her daughter the same day to see Director of Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgeon Corinna Franklin, M.D..

A few days later, Dr. Franklin performed surgery on Elizabeth’s ankle, followed by casting. Six weeks later, after the cast was removed, she began therapy with Christin Krey, PT, MPT, PCS, physical therapist at Shriners Children’s. Some of Elizabeth’s physical therapy sessions were able to be completed virtually via video visits due to changes with processes due to COVID-19.

Although Elizabeth’s surgery was performed at Shriners Children's Philadelphia, her follow-up appointments were at the Shriners Children’s at Doylestown Health, which recently opened during Elizabeth’s journey to recovery. The clinic provides the first opportunity for children and teens to be evaluated and treated outside of the Shriners Children's Philadelphia hospital's 95-year history. The clinic is open to see patients Monday–Friday; 8 a.m.–4 p.m..

Mollie was happy with her daughter’s experience at the hospital and was even more thrilled to find out that follow-up care could now happen closer to their home.

Everyone in every department has been amazing, especially during the peak of COVID times. I was also glad to hear that great care we received in the city would conveniently also be offered so close to home.
Elizabeth's mom, Mollie

Elizabeth is now back to playing sports. Her mom attributes her daughter’s quick return to sports to the support she received from her care team at the hospital.

“When she was going through physical therapy, Dr. Franklin and Christin both gave her encouraging words to keep her motivated during the process, and now she is even better than she was before she broke her ankle,” said Mollie.

Shriners Children’s at Doylestown Health is located in the Pavilion on the Doylestown Health Campus located at 599 W. State Street, Suite 305, Doylestown, PA, 18901.
