The knee extension stretch is performed in order to maintain the ability to fully straighten the knee. Have your child rest on his or her back. Place one hand on the front of the thigh, just above the knee cap. Be careful not to press directly on top of the knee cap.
With the other hand, grasp one of the lower rings of the external fixator. Slowly and firmly, push the thigh downward while lifting upward on the external fixator, in order to straighten the knee. Your child will feel a stretching or pulling sensation on the back of the knee.
The stretch is typically held between 10 and 20 seconds, and repeated five to 10 times. Your child's PT will provide individualized instructions, and will work with you and your child to minimize discomfort during stretches.
