Purnendu Gupta, M.D., has been our chief of staff at Shriners Children's Chicago since 2016. "My work at Shriners Children's has become the most satisfying aspect of my career," says Dr. Gupta. "As chief of staff I would love to see us grow and become the prominent pediatric hospital in Chicago for pediatric orthopedic, plastic surgery and spinal rehabilitation."

Dr. Gupta has expertise in pediatric scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, tumors, traumatic injuries and complex spinal reconstruction. He started his career in 1996 and has had academic appointments at the Ohio State University, University of Chicago, and currently at the University of Illinois, Chicago. A native of Chicagoland, Dr. Gupta attended Northwestern University as a member of the Honors Program for Medical Education, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Medicine in 1988, and earned his Doctor of Medicine from Northwestern University Medical School in 1990. His post graduate medical education included a general surgery internship and orthopedic residency training at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Children's Memorial Hospital (now Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital) of Chicago. He completed a fellowship in complex scoliosis and spinal disorders at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis. During his fellowship, Dr. Gupta trained at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children's Hospital and Shriners Children's St. Louis, with an emphasis on scoliosis, kyphosis and spondylolisthesis. Dr. Gupta's has conducted extensive research focused on scoliosis, biomechanics and spinal surgical techniques.

He is the recipient of many honors including the prestigious Spine Volvo Award in Biomechanics from the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine for ergonomic research. Dr. Gupta has been internationally published and served on the editorial boards for several journals including: The Spine Journal, Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, Clinical Biomechanics and the American Journal of Sports Medicine. A world-renowned presenter, Dr. Gupta has volunteered as a spine surgeon for The Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine in Ghana and the SRS Global Outreach Program.
