The staff welcomed Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-06) to Shriners Children’s Northern California, the largest multidisciplinary hospital in the Shriners Children’s healthcare system. The pediatric hospital offers comprehensive, specialized programs to respond to the limited options for pediatric subspecialty care, including pediatric surgery, acute in-patient pediatric rehabilitation, reconstructive surgery, complex spine disorders, cerebral palsy, spina bifida and neuromuscular disorders.

Shriners Children’s Northern California is home to the only comprehensive pediatric colorectal center in California, and recently expanded their spinal cord rehabilitation program, treating children with brain trauma and other specialty care needs. The hospital continues to be ranked nationally by U.S. News and World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, as a top pediatric hospital for orthopedics in partnership with UC Davis Children’s Hospital.

Matsui’s visit falls during a historic time for Shriners Children’s Northern California as it celebrates the 25th anniversary of the burn program, the 100th anniversary of Shriners Children’s and the 150th anniversary of Shriners International. Having treated more than 100,000 children since Shriners Children’s Northern California’s move from San Francisco in 1997, the Sacramento location continues to increase that number with more than 30,000 patient visits each year.

“In Sacramento, care and community are part of our identity. Shriners Children’s Northern California physicians, nurses, physical therapists, researchers and hospital staff continue to display compassion and kindness to children and families facing some of the most challenging days of their lives,” said Matsui. “Shriners Children’s is a true display of health equity, where these children have access to amazing care regardless of their ability to pay or insurance status. In doing so, this organization has transformed the lives of thousands of children.”

“We are proud of our role in providing barrier-free access for children in need of a personalized, multidisciplinary approach to complex problems. Collaborating with patients and their caregivers, along with their communities, is certainly a large part of our success,” said Allan (AJ) Johnson, director of clinical services at Shriners Children’s Northern California. “Our staff and clinical teams are some of the most dedicated medical professionals in the world. Meeting with national leaders like Congresswoman Matsui reminds us of the significant work that remains in making a difference in the lives of more kids in more places, one patient at a time.”

Improving the lives of children and their families continues to be at the center of Shriners Children’s core mission, allowing them to become one of the largest pediatric sub-specialty healthcare systems in the world with locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
